Gym-Tastic Event for Year 3-4 Pupils!
In the first sporting event of Autumn 2, Mrs Cummings and Mrs Rand took two teams of excited gymnasts over to Priestlands for an afternoon of springing, leaping and rehearsed routines. Just over 40 pupils put their names forward for the event, which was fantastic, so Mr Willis had to pull names from a hat to whittle numbers down to a team of 7.
The event was a lovely balance of competition and coaching, providing school teams with the chance to perform two routines to music before being coached by staff and young Sports Leaders on the Air track, trampolines and vaulting horse. Unfortunately, three schools had to pull out at the last minute. They will have the opportunity to submit their routines via video, but our gymnasts still had two schools to compete against on the afternoon: Beaulieu and Our Lady & St Joseph’s.
Squeezing in routines when they could, Mrs Cummings worked with Team A to produce two routines to music, showing the children’s skills in balance, counter-balance movement and musicality and she was really impressed with their enthusiasm and effort in the short time they had together. Then, because of the schools pulling out, Mrs Cummings was able to pull out a further six names from the hat to attend, not to compete, but to experience the fantastic gym equipment and Priestlands.
Accompanied by Mrs Rand as well, the pupils all had a fantastic afternoon, with lots of laughs, smiles as they performed their mat work sequences and then challenged themselves on the Air Track and other gym equipment available. Mrs Cummings and Mrs Rand reported that is was an amazing afternoon of gymnastics with amazing group and individual performances from all of our pupils, who listened well to the coaching on offer and threw themselves (literally) into everything on offer.
There was no medal ceremony at the end of this event as the PSP is still waiting for the videoed sequences to be sent in, but we will keep you posted once we hear.
Huge thanks to all our pupils for their effort and attitude on the day and of course to Mrs Cummings, for her training, Mrs Rand for accompanying Team B and all the parents who helped with transport.
Next up is the Year 5/6 Gymnastics.
