Computing

Computing @ Milford-on-Sea Primary School

At Milford on Sea Primary School we are courageous in our learning, aspire to be the best we can be, have respect for ourselves and others and have fun exploring the world around us.

Vision Statement

At Milford-on-Sea Primary School we believe that the effective use of computers and ICT is a key life skill. In an increasingly digital world there now exists a wealth of software, tools and technologies that can be used to communicate, collaborate, express ideas and be used to create digital content. It is vital that our pupils can use this technology effectively and safely.

We recognise that pupils are entitled to a broad and balanced computing education with a structured, progressive, approach to the learning how computer systems work, the use of IT and the skills necessary to become digitally literate and participate fully in the modern world.

Intent

At Milford-on-Sea we aim to deliver a broad and balanced computing curriculum that can be used to solve real-world problems and give children the opportunity to show their creativity.  We want children to explore the limitless possibilities that technology can offer to communicate, collaborate and to express their ideas. Children will also need to develop their critical thinking, use logical reasoning and develop their own resilience to detect and correct errors (de-bugging).

Our curriculum seeks to teach children how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; considering the impact ICT can have both locally and globally. We aim to provide children with the understanding of both positive and negative outcomes. Through our comprehensive coverage of Online Safety, (using the latest resources from National Online Safety & Project Evolve), our curriculum seeks to give children the courage to make respectful decisions with regard to their own online behaviours and to tell a trusted adult if they are worried by anything they see online, or if they know that they, or someone they know is being treated unkindly online.

We want children to be confident and competent in creating, organising, manipulating and retrieving digital content. We recognise that children need to have flexible skills that can be adapted to new technologies to be used in the future work place. Our vision is for the children to aspire to be the digital leaders of the future, breaking new ground in technology.

Our intention is that our Computing curriculum ensures, when children leave Milford-on-Sea Primary School, they are confident, competent, respectful and safe users of ICT with an understanding of how technology works. They will have developed skills to express themselves and be creative in using digital media and be equipped to apply their skills in Computing to different challenges going forward into Secondary school and beyond.
