Our intentions in Modern Foreign Languages

At Milford-on-Sea Primary School ‘We CARE’ about language education. We believe it fosters curiosity in the world and deepens understanding of and RESPECT for identity, diversity, cultures and world views. It also gives an opportunity to EXPLORE  how languages are interconnected and continually evolving and borrowing from each other.

Our teaching of MfL & Spanish should both enable and give children the COURAGE to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, understand basic language structures and introduce them to simple, or familiar stories, songs and rhymes. Learning a language also helps develop our  pupils’ Growth Mindset and provides the foundation from which we hope they will ASPIRE to extend their learning in Spanish, or learn further languages, as they progress through their learning journey into secondary school and beyond into our global community.

Our INTENT for the MOSPS  MfL Curriculum:

We have designed our curriculum in collaboration with Language Angels and make use of their scheme of work and resources, so that our learners:

  •  Are provided with a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes.
  • Are exposed to a whole-school culture, which aims to enthuse, inspire and enable  learners to achieve at their own level.
  • Are supported and challenged through learning journeys that are both progressive and ‘spiral’, allowing them to recall and build on prior learning.
  • Develop a genuine interest in, and positive curiosity about, foreign languages,so that they become life-long language learners
  • Have the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity and to develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them.

It is our intention that pupils at MOSPS will learn to:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish with increasing confidence
  • Speak with increasing confidence and fluency, communicating what they want to say through discussion and asking questions.
  • Continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Begin to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt.
  • Gain the courage to ‘Have a Go’ in a supportive classroom environment.

MFL in our school is taught using a Scheme of Work produced by Language Angels, which has been created in accordance with the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages.

Key Concepts in the teaching of MfL
