Art- Sculpture using clay

We explored different sculptures from around the world and discussed what we thought they were and what material they were made from.

We discovered that our new topic is sculpture using clay and that we are going to be making a dragon eye.

Using play dough we explored the different techniques we might use when using clay.  They included: push, flatten, pinch, cut, pierce and twist.

Also, we explored making patterns and texture in playdough using different items around the classroom. Some examples of what we used are: glue spreader, lego, keys and glue lids. In order to make our dragon eyes 3D, we learned a technique called slipping and scoring.

When designing our dragon eyes, we took into account what texture and patterns we wanted to include and whether we were going to make it 3D or not.

The children enjoyed making their designs out of clay and painting them.  Finally, the children evaluated their design and and discussed what they would change if they were to make the eye again.
