This half term we have been extending our knowledge of plants. We have all experimented what a plant needs to grow when we planted cress in different areas of our classrooms and when planting in our KS1 outdoor planting areas. The children found out what a 'fair' test is, made predictions and recorded their results. Our predictions needed to consider if plants always need soil, light, water and warmth to grow, we observed the changes in our cress overtime.
We all enjoyed exploring the life-cycles of plants and trees as well as understanding the purpose of their physical structures such as the stems, leaves, roots and flowers. Similarly we then compared the structures of a tree to a plant recognising a tree has a trunk instead of a stem and the children could explain in discussion why they have similar/ different properties and structures.
We all classified and sorted both common wild and garden plants that can be found outdoors and participated in a plant hunt and tree hunt around school!
The children all identified and named Deciduous and Evergreen trees sharing through observations they had made whilst on a tree walk with a checklist, these activities supported the children to develop their understanding of the differences between these key terms.
