Flat Stan First Aid

This afternoon, we learnt all about keeping ourselves and others safe with a Flat Stan First Aid course.

We started off by learning all about:

Danger

Response

Airways

Breathing

Compressions

This means looking for dangers first. For example, stopping traffic at a road accident.

We then need to check for a response by tapping their shoulders or speaking to them.

It is important to check that their airways are clear by titling their chin back.

We need to check if someone is breathing by putting our hand above their mouth or looking at their chest.

If the person still isn't responding, then we need to give them chest compressions to try to encourage their heart to beat. We practised this and did this 30 times and we know that we need to keep doing this until someone takes over or a defibrillator is used.

We need to seek help and call 999

We also learnt about other areas of first aid. For example:

Choking - If someone is choking then you have to see if they are coughing first. If they are coughing it is good, if they are not then you need to back thrust then 5 times and then resort to the heimlich maneuver.

Open wounds - You need to apply pressure to the wound. This could be by a bandage or even a T-shirt.

Burns - if you burn yourself, you need to run it under cold water for at least 20 minutes.

Nose bleeds - if you were to get a nose bleed then you have to hold the soft part of your nose and look down for at least 10 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes.

Thank you Flat Stan for teaching us all of this important information.
