Our intentions in Modern Foreign Languages

At Milford-on-Sea Primary School ‘We CARE’ about language education. It fosters curiosity in the world and deepens understanding of identity, diversity, cultures and world views. It also gives a sense of how languages are interconnected and continually evolving and borrowing from each other. Children can also explore national and international contexts in which languages are spoken in different continents i.e. Spanish in Latin America.

Our teaching of Spanish enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. Our link sister school in Pamplona gives our pupils regular opportunity to write letters and Skype each other. This ensures that children celebrate our similarities and differences in a meaningful way.

Learning a language also helps our pupils’ Growth Mindset and provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in our global community.

Key Concepts in the teaching of MfL

The teaching of MfL is considered through the lens of key concepts which give focus to particular units of work. Each concept is broken down into knowledge categories that drive the teaching objectives within MfL units and lessons.
