Our Design Technology unit this half term has been textiles and sewing so the children in Year 1 and 2 made puppets! We had been learning about the story of the Three Little Pigs in english so we decided to create a character from that story. The children first explored different types of puppets and looked carefully at how they were made and how they moved. They then learnt different joining techniques for fabric which were pinning, glueing, stapling and sewing. We discussed which joins were strong and which joins would be useful for making a puppet.
Then we begain to sew! They all learnt the running stitch and we did lots of practice of this during our lesson, but also at other times using binka and cardboard. The children then had to design their puppet and think carefully about the resources they would need. Finally we made the puppets and they were able to decorate them using all the skills that they had practiced.
They were so proud of the finished product and we had a lot of fun acting out the story using them!
