English- Egg Box Dragon

The children were introduced to the picture book story titled 'Egg Box Dragon' written by Richard Adams.

They engaged in a range of writing opportunities linked to the text.  Initially, they listened to the description of the dragon and drew what they thought it would look like. Exploring the front cover, they made a prediction about the story thinking about what they could see and infer in the image. In the story, the dragon, who was the main character, was able to complete tasks which he became famous for but the children were able to change what the dragon was able to do and replace it with their own ideas. Using hot seating, the children asked the Egg Box Dragon questions to develop an understanding of what he was like as a character.  Designing their own Egg Box Dragon allowed the children to be creative and to think about what characteristics their dragon would have. After designing their Egg Box Dragon the children then wrote a fact file on it thinking about appearance, habitat, diet and any other fun facts about it. In the story, the Queen holds a party at her castle.  The children wrote an invitation to the Egg Box Dragon using the key information from within the story. The outcome of this writing journey was for the children to retell the story of the Egg Box Dragon but using their own dragon and also using the ideas of what the dragon could do from a previous lesson.  To support their ideas, the children planned their story first ensuring that they had changed the events within it.
