English - Winter

Narnia

Our Winter topic began by looking at the beginning of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe text by CS Lewis. We read the origonal text and watched the scene from the film where Lucy goes through the wardrobe. The children loved this text and imagined how characters were feeling at different times and we spent a lot of time collecting new vocabulary to describe what she saw. They then wrote their own setting description using all that they had learnt about adjectives and expanded noun phrases.

Solo

Next we studied the text Solo by Paul Geraghty. We made predictions, looked at new vocabulary and focussed our grammar learning on verbs and how they are used in the text. It was very interesting to sort the different parts of the story into positive and negative which the children completed very thoughtfully. We all enjoyed making up a new problem that Solo might have and our final piece of writing was describing this new problem in the style of the text. To finish our learning about this book, we wrote a book review describing our thoughts.

Penguin Fact Files

To complete our winter topic we learnt about non fiction texts and chose to write a fact file about penguins. The children loved collecting facts about them and they then turned these facts into short paragraphs. All of the children then published their writing into a final fact file and we were so proud of the final product with all of the illustrations.

Some children then finished this topic by writing a piece of independent writing to answer the question 'Would you like to visit Antarctica? Why?'
