History- Great Fire of London

In History the children have been learning about The Great Fire of London and explored what life was like in 1666. The children explored the living conditions in London in 1666 and compared them to now – they discussed what time period would be easier to live in and why.  Year 2 branched out to look at the different jobs people had in 1666 and compared them to now – the children discovered how different the jobs where back then to now. The children later went on to explore how the fire started and where (we explored how we knew the facts about the fire and compared sources from 1666). The children then thought about the causes and consequences asking questions about why London burnt so quickly and explored the changes that have been made to buildings and streets today, to prevent it from happening again. The Great Fire of London had lots of key characters including Samuel Pepys and we identified and sorted different sources such as his diary and thought about why it was useful.  Towards the end of the unit the children reflected back on the events of the fire and concluded what the impact was using maps to colour the areas that were affected by the fire, Year 2’s used keys on their maps to show how quickly the fire spread and its location.
