Science - Living Things and their Habitats

This half term the children have been exploring living things and their habitats.

The children have identified and classified different animals into groups: birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Year 2’s had the challenge of sorting the animals by classifying into their different groups but consider which habitats they may be from. The children then went on to explore what a habitat is, naming a variety of different plants and animals there are including microhabitats and mini-beasts, The children then went on a habitat hunt around the school, working scientifically to record their findings on a pictogram.

We have also explored that living things live in habitats and identified how they are suited including what they need to survive. Year 1 chose different animals and labelled their physical features and year 2 wrote how animals where suited to their environment and what adaptations they have.

Later on in the unit the children explored how animals and plants depend on each other, we then sorted animals by what they eat into herbivores, carnivore and omnivores. Year 2 extended their thinking to investigate what different animals eat looking more closely at animal’s food chains and how they depend on each other to survive.
